More about our dog of honor, Andrew the Great Maltese:

The judges of the CBS summer hit Greatest American Dog may have selected him runner-up, however Andrew is the designated winner in the hearts of millions of fans who marveled at his devotion and incredible relationship he shared with his partner, Laurie.  Despite his diminutive size, this 8 lb dynamo hung with the big boys,  outperforming them in a number of challenges and thus has become a role model and spokesdog for small dogs everywhere. In honor of this inspiring little dog, Pup ‘N Iron Canine Fitness & Learning Center is hosting the Thank Heaven, Andrew’s Turning 7-Birthday Party Benefit and FUNdraiser for the United Maltese Rescue, Inc. on Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Event Mission:
Since the summer of 2000, United Maltese Rescue, Inc. has been dedicated to the rescue of Maltese and Maltese crosses of all ages in need of new homes with loving families in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Unfortunately, because of their small size and appealing perpetual “puppy look,” Maltese are one of the most popular breeds among puppy mills and pet stores.  Pup ‘N Iron LLC enthusiastically lends Andrew’s celebrity status and popularity in support of UMR by hosting this festive celebration and fundraiser featuring celebrity dogs, a doggie couture fashion show, silent auction, raffles, food, drink, photographic services, fun and games, with 100% of the proceeds going to United Maltese Rescue, Inc.

Why support the United Maltese Rescue, Inc.?
United Maltese Rescue, Inc. is a non profit 501 (c) 3 organization supported solely by volunteers and donations. In addition to providing foster homes and general care, rescues often come to UMR with a variety of health problems, sometimes life threatening, and requiring immediate veterinary care. Without hesitation, UMR has dedicated itself to provide these services for all rescues in need.  These veterinary costs must be paid at the time the services are rendered, and customarily UMR is not extended any discounts.  This places a heavy financial burden on the organization.  Simply put, your support will ultimately help save lives.

The need is critical:

* Thousands of homeless Maltese and Maltese crosses are listed on Petfinder.com at this very moment
* Many suffer from illness related to neglect, abuse and improper care
* Maltese are among the top 5 breeds most likely to be found in puppy mills
